BoBI faculty, Postdoctoral researchers and Graduate students told us about their research in talks and posters. Our graduate and undergraduate summer fellowship recipients were honored, and a precious poster prize awarded. Congratulations to all!

Congratulations to our BoBI Undergraduate Scholars Summer 2014

In collaboration with the UH Office of Undergraduate Research the two BoBI sponsored undergraduate researchers have been chosen: Ola al-Hatem and Khadeeja Tarique will be performing research in Dr. Gregg Roman’s lab in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry. Besides their research, they will participate in summer activities alongside the SURF students.

BoBI Summer Undergraduate Fellowship

BoBI has collaborated with the UH Office of Undergraduate Research for the past few years to allow students to work in BoBI member labs for the summer. This year BoBI will fund two undergraduate researchers this summer, and they will participate alongside the SURF students.

Fruit Flies Unlock Secrets of Memory

Using fruit flies and strong odors, Biology of Behavior researchers have made significant progress in understanding memory formation and the works of Pavlovian conditioning. The research has revealed important activity in nerve cells as well as interactions with proteins that regulate and control the mechanisms behind forming memories.

SURF Student in BoBI Lab

Harith Al-baldawi from the Roman Lab. Harith’s project will examine the role of dopaminergic signaling to the pars intercerebralis neurons (PI) in controlling hunger-induced exploration in Drosophila. The PI is analogous to the human hypothalamus, integrating endocrine and neural functions. These neurons also control feeding behaviors. Harith’s hypothesis is that DopR1 receptors in these neurons, through cAMP signaling, modulate hunger related behaviors such as extrinsic exploration.
